A leader of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) said Monday that Hamas will joint any new Palestinian government to be formed after the parliamentary election.
"In case it (Hamas) wins in the election, it will join a coalition Palestinian government," said Islma??eel Haneya, a senior Hamas leader in Gaza.
Hamas will not only join the Palestinian government, "but will also join the executive committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO)," Haneya added.
Hamas, a radical militant group sworn to Israel's destruction, boycotted the first Palestinian parliamentary election in 1996, but it has indicated willingness to participate this year and emerged as a serious challenger to the ruling Fatah movement.
"We are aiming at constructing a new political system based on political partnership which will be able to confront future challenges posed to our people," said Haneya.
With a surging street popularity, Hamas put up a strong showing in the local elections. It has also largely abided by a de facto truce with Israel.
Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas has announced to postpone the parliamentary election, which was originally slated for July 17, due to disputes with the parliament over to the way to hold the polls.
It is also widely believed that the postponement will give Abbas more time to prepare for the challenge posted by Hamas to his Fatah movement in the legislative election.
