Iran on Monday condoled with Saudi Arabia on the demise of King Fahd bin Abdel Aziz, the official IRNA news agency reported.

Outgoing President Mohammad Khatami, in a message to Saudi Arabia's newly-appointed King Abdullah bin Abdel Aziz, condoled him, his government and nation on the demise of late King Fahd.

President Khatami expressed his deep regret and sorrow about the demise of the late king, hailing his efforts in the maintenance and consolidation of bilateral "fraternal ties" as well as unity among Muslim nations.

Meanwhile, Iran's President-Elect Mahmood Ahmadinejad also extended similar condolences in a message to King Abdullah, according to the report.

Saudi King Fahd, 84, was announced dead earlier in the day.
